The city of Delhi is Bhartti Verma’s main protagonist and her urban landscapes fill us with a sense of mystery. Her metropolis of the 21st century reveals the city as a dwelling, a grid of living spaces, a matrix, a womb.  In the current exhibition her ‘mother portraits’ metamorph into a series of meditations on the city, one that is silent and emptied of all human presence. The city could be viewed as a uterine space waiting to be inhabited by humans or post humans who exist on a heightened plane of existence. Either way, it is the blueprint of an ideal city or a strategic city ‘in the making’.
