Equestrian Rhapsody

January 27 – March 14, 2020

In Equestrian Rhapsody, Jai Zharotia (1945 – 2021) reimagines the horse as an unrestrained, dynamic creature, embodying themes of freedom, acceptance, and equality. These drawings, created during a period of his own physical recovery, show horses in fluid motion, unconfined by handlers, with minimal lines and limbs that give them a sense of weightlessness and joy. Unlike his earlier works, where horses were more static and controlled, these drawings capture the boundless energy and spontaneity of the animals. Zharotia’s black and white drawings, featuring the evolving relationship between humans and horses, highlight their deep connection, with the figures gradually merging into one. This symbolic representation of truth and harmony, set against a backdrop of contrast and balance, invites the viewer to contemplate the ongoing dialogue between the two figures. Zharotia’s horses, in their raw energy and emotional depth, convey not only the artist’s personal journey, but also a universal expression of life’s complexities.
