Imagining Women

January 9 – March 19, 2021

Imagining Women delves into the evolving representations of femininity, showcasing the works of both male and female artists. Historically, male artists have often idealized and objectified women, creating images that reflect societal expectations rather than authentic experiences. Women artists, particularly since the 1960s, have challenged these notions, questioning traditional assumptions about womanhood and creating alternative representations that highlight their agency and individuality. This shift has not only redefined art, but also sparked conversations about gender equality and the role of women in society. Through diverse mediums like painting, performance art, and crafts once dismissed as “women’s work”, feminist art has grown from portraying embodied female experiences to engaging with psychoanalysis and postmodern theory. These works now explore broader issues of race, privilege, gender identity, and fluidity, offering a rich and nuanced perspective. By presenting varied responses from both genders, this exhibition invites viewers to reflect on how women have been imagined and how they envision themselves in a continually evolving dialogue. With thought-provoking works that span cultures, mediums, and ideologies, Imagining Women promises to inspire and expand your understanding of art and identity.
