Liminal Worlds

September 4 – October 23, 2021

Liminal Worlds presents the artistic endeavors of two emerging female artists, Sunanda Khajuria and Gouri Vemula. Despite their distinct artistic styles, both Sunanda and Gouri craft liminal spaces within their creations, fostering transient and dream-like environments inhabited by their protagonists. This concept underscores an awareness of multiple coexisting realities, rejecting the notion of exclusivity. Through the construction of such spaces, the artists gain the flexibility to reconcile differences and explore interconnectedness. Gouri Vemula’s pen and ink drawings depict surreal landscapes populated by mythic beings like gods, goddesses, and animals, inspired by the nearby forest where she spends time contemplating and sketching. Within her fantastical realm, diverse creatures seamlessly blend into their surroundings, alternating between camouflage and bold self-expression in urban and rural settings. Similarly, Sunanda Khajuria’s ongoing exploration, exemplified in her Moving Landscapes series, draws from her profound connection with nature and urban life. She employs recurring visual motifs such as birds, animals, clouds, and mountains, juxtaposed with village homes and modern transportation, sourced from ancient Chinese and Indian iconography. This inventive lexicon of visual symbolism allows Khajuria to construct a rich tapestry of meanings, reflecting her personal journey and the diverse landscapes she inhabits.
