Negotiation: In Contested Space – Part 1

January 12 – March 2, 2018

Art Heritage, in collaboration with The Guild, presents Negotiation: In Contested Space – Part 1, a group show featuring the works of Jyothi Basu, G R Iranna, Pooja Iranna, Baiju Parthan, Sumedh Rajendran, K. P. Reji, N. N. Rimzon, T. V. Santhosh, and Gigi Scaria. This exhibition explores the ongoing negotiation of contested space through modernist and post-modernist aesthetic and conceptual representations, highlighting the complexities of contemporary life. These artists engage with fractured narratives, unstable contexts, and multiple forms of representation, seeking languages that capture the fragmented, dynamic interplay of their surroundings.

In Negotiation in Contested Space, the artists formulate their roles as directors of spaces that suspend modernist, traditional, and contemporary uses of representation. By carefully selecting myth-making, symbology, architectural framing, and perspective, they create flexible languages that accommodate diverse subjects, objects, and contexts within contemporary spaces. The exhibition, conceived by Renuka Sawhney and curated by Amal Allana, allows these artists to claim their place in the world as a frame through which systemic structures, individual narratives, and forms negotiate and interact.
