On the LIRR

March 17 – April 15, 2018

Art Heritage is proud to showcase the works of Master Printer Devraj Dakoji, an artist who has been part of the gallery for four decades. This exhibition features over one hundred drawings created over eight years, each rendered on a Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) ticket. Having lived in New York for over twenty years, Dakoji described the creation of his LIRR Drawings as a way to keep his hands busy during his commute from Manhattan to Babylon, where he worked as a Master Printer. With limited resources, he used the train tickets as canvases for his art, with many of these drawings eventually becoming studies for larger works. These drawings not only chronicle physical transit but also reflect the artist’s struggle to balance creative production with the daily rhythms of life. The halting marks on each ticket evoke the motion of the train, and together, they form a powerful collection that affirms Dakoji’s distinct artistic identity.
