On The Threshold of Time: A Decade

August 4 – September 2, 2023

On The Threshold of Time is an annual event held at Art Heritage, dedicated to promoting young and emerging talent from across India. The works that are selected have either been spotted by us or brought to our notice by the artists themselves. The exhibition celebrates its tenth edition, occurring during a transitional time with the pandemic’s inertia still lingering, but a hopeful and uncomplicated future ahead.

One of the most striking elements in the works in this show is the recurrent presence of the human figure. Each artist’s approach to working with the human figure is distinct – Pooja Shah and Raka Panda’s artwork weaves intricate narratives, focusing on personal relationships and our interconnectedness with nature, respectively. Shah’s renderings resemble movie scenes, exploring the psychology of the characters surrounding her. On the other hand, Panda’s canvases are filled with vibrant nature or cityscapes, teeming with life in all its forms. It’s as if the artist needed to create crowds in her works to keep her company during prolonged isolation. In contrast, Prajapati Utpal avoids crowds, impacted by a past incident that scarred him. Placing crowds and other incongruous elements in his works serves as an act of catharsis and therapy, resulting in surrealistic renderings that help him make sense of a chaotic planet. And lastly, Sudip Shit’s tranquil wood and fiber sculptures serve as comforting companions. Their collective presence at Art Heritage reminds us that the time has come again to see each other in three dimensions, life-size, without restrictions of a monitor or screen, allowing for physical reconnection.
