Opening Lines
October 15 – November 11, 2019
Art Heritage presents Opening Lines, a historic research exhibition celebrating Ebrahim Alkazi (co-founder of Art Heritage) as an artist in his own right, showcasing a significant collection of his paintings and drawings from the 1950s and 1960s, never before publicly displayed. Alkazi, renowned as a legendary theatre-maker, pedagogue, and mentor, is often remembered more for his contributions to theatre than his art-making. Curated by Ranjit Hoskote, the exhibition brings together works from Alkazi’s exhibitions at the Asian Institute (London, 1950), Jehangir Art Gallery (Bombay, 1952), and Shridharani Gallery (New Delhi, 1965). His works span various media, including watercolours, charcoal, ink, and frottage, and draw from post-World War II artistic movements like Primitivism, with influences ranging from African masks to Neolithic drawings. His art reflects deep historical and mythic references, including the figure of Christ, embodying themes of sacrifice, anguish, and resurrection.
