The Lyrical Impulse showcases the mastery of water-based mediums by three senior artists—Devraj Dakoji, Jean Bhownagary and Seema Kohli—each with a distinctive approach that transforms this often-unpredictable medium into a powerful tool for storytelling and expression. Moving beyond the traditional confines of small landscapes, the exhibition highlights the artist’s ability to manipulate watercolours and other fluid-based solutions to serve their unique artistic visions. Dakoji’s works, deceptively abstract at first glance, reveal intricate forms that explore humanity’s relationship with nature through his Wheel of Life and Rock Print series. Jean Bhownagary, in contrast, captures a sense of dynamic movement with swift, energetic strokes, as seen in his depictions of trees battling invisible gusts of wind. Seema Kohli takes the exploration further by incorporating watercolours, gouache, and tea/coffee stains into her mixed media works.
