Women Seen and Remembered

August 13 – September 9, 2018

Art Heritage, in collaboration with The Seagull Foundation for the Arts, presents Women Seen and Remembered: Drawings by K. G. Subramanyan (1953-2016), a monumental exhibition in New Delhi. Featuring a wide range of mediums, including acrylics, reverse paintings, and terracotta murals, the exhibition highlights Subramanyan’s hundreds of drawings, created over six decades, which reflect his dynamic perception of women.

With over fifty percent of his sketches focused on women, the exhibition traces their evolving portrayal, from the domesticated figures of the 1950s to self-aware, sensual women in the 1970s, and then to masked, dual images in the 1980s and 90s. By the 2000s, his women are depicted as empowered, involved in larger social issues, with some works featuring the goddess Mahishasura, radiating cosmic energy. This exhibition offers a rare glimpse into how Subramanyan’s evolving views of women were expressed through his art.
