Works of Conscience

January 28 – March 2, 2019

Works of Conscience features artworks from The Alkazi Collection and Art Heritage Collection. The exhibition addresses universal issues related to social injustices, gender, and political events, with artists responding to their critical times using allegory, metaphor, and symbol, as well as through cold realism. The works openly express dissent, protest, and critique, offering a poignant commentary on the world around them. The exhibition includes paintings, drawings, photography, installations, and sculptures from renowned artists like Akbar Padamsee, Arpana Caur, Gogi Saroj Pal, K.G. Subramanyan, Ronny Sen, and others.

A notable piece in the exhibition is Window Without a Wall, an installation by Vanita Gupta, created in collaboration with architect Naveen Mahantesh. The installation originated from Gupta’s experience in New York during the 2015 Asian Cultural Council Fellowship. It features a modified version of an Ezra Pound poem placed on a windowpane, with the words gradually falling off and freeing themselves from the constraints of language and architecture. This transformation symbolizes the passage of time, growth, and entropy, reflecting Gupta’s relationship with the city and her evolving thoughts. The mature version of the installation, developed in collaboration with Naveen Mahantesh, enhances this metaphor, adding depth to the exploration of time and change.
